Chemical Engineering Students from Unimal Achieve Multiple Prestigious Awards
Unimal Chemical Engineering Students Win 3rd Place at the International Plant Design Competition PESIGUC USK 2024
Banda Aceh, October 19, 2024 – A team of Chemical Engineering students from Universitas Malikussaleh (Unimal) has won third place at the International Plant Design Competition PESIGUC 2024 organized by Syiah Kuala University (USK). The event, which focused on process simulation and plant design, featured strong competitors from various universities, both domestic and international.
The Unimal team, consisting of Nanda, Bayu Darmawan, and Rizki Amelia, competed in the event virtually. They were guided by their advisor, Nasrul ZA, S.T., M.T., who played an instrumental role in their preparation and strategy throughout the competition. Despite facing strong competitors, the Unimal team managed to secure a podium finish, showcasing their expertise in plant design and process simulation.
The competition, held entirely online, presented unique challenges, including the need for seamless communication and collaboration among team members.
“We are very proud to have achieved third place. This competition presented new challenges, especially since all processes were conducted online. Communication and collaboration were key, and we are very grateful for the exceptional guidance from Mr. Nasrul,” said Nanda, representing the team.
The first place in the competition was won by Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), while the second place was secured by Universitas Riau (UNRI), making Unimal the only representative from Aceh to achieve a top-three finish.
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Universitas Malikussaleh, Dr. Muhammad Daud, expressed his pride in the team's accomplishment.
“This success reflects the spirit and hard work of the students and their advisor in facing challenges. It proves that Unimal students can compete internationally, even in digital formats that require quick adaptation,” he said.
This achievement is expected to motivate other students at Unimal to participate in similar competitions and continue to bring recognition to the university at the international level. It also demonstrates Unimal's commitment to supporting innovation and knowledge advancement, especially in the field of chemical engineering.

LKTIN ChEERS 2024 (Universitas Riau)

In the National Scientific Writing Competition (LKTIN) ChEERS 2024, held from July 3-6, 2024, atUniversitas Riau, two teams from Unimal’s Chemical Engineering Department excelled in different categories.
Team 1 Renewable Energy, consisting of Nanda, Novitasari, and Ayu Adinda Putri Br Ginting, secured 3rd Place Overall with their project titled "Conversion of Renewable Wave Energy into Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia in the Era of Society 5.0". This project gained recognition for its innovative approach to green energy solutions, perfectly in line with modern sustainability efforts.
Team 2 Environmental Solutions, composed of Nashrun Habib Tahihoran and Gebrina Rizki, won 2nd Place in the Innovative Ideas Category with their work on "Utilizing Drone Sensors with Internet of Things (IoT) Systems for Optimizing Air Filtration Around Coal-Fired Power Plants". Their project impressed the judges by leveraging modern technology to tackle air pollution challenges in industrial settings. (Link News)
Plant Design Competition (PDC) 2024

In the National Plant Design Competition Chemical Engineering(NPDCCE) 2024, held nationally, Unimal’s Chemical Engineering students secured the First Runner-Up position. The competition required teams to design environmentally friendly, renewable energy-based industrial plants. Unimal’s team impressed the judges with their design that integrated advanced renewable energy technology to maximize energy efficiency and minimize environmental impact. Link News

In the Competition (PESIGUC) 2024, organized by Syiah Kuala University (USK), Unimal’s Chemical Engineering team secured Third Place. The first place was awarded to ITB (Institut Teknologi Bandung), and second place was secured by Universitas Negeri Semarang (Unes). Unimal's innovative design, which utilized green energy technologies in the petroleum industry, stood out for its ability to increase efficiency in petroleum production while reducing environmental impact. This achievement highlights Unimal’s capability to compete on an international level. Link News
NPDCCE 2019
The National Plant Design Competition 2019, held over three days at the Chemical Engineering Department of Universitas Malikussaleh, concluded on Friday (21/06/2019) night at the ACC Cunda Hall, Lhokseumawe. Institut Teknologi Indonesia (ITI) Jakarta won first place, receiving IDR 5 million, a plaque, and a certificate. A total of 36 teams from various universities participated, including Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta and Universitas Bung Hatta.

The winners were announced by two members of the judging panel, Safwat Ardy and Yuliana Stevani, along with the head judge, Zulfakri from PT. Pupuk Iskandar Muda.
Dr. Lukman Hakim, Head of the Chemical Engineering Department at Universitas Malikussaleh, expressed that the competition will be held every two years, with plans for the next one in January 2021 on a Southeast Asian scale. "We hope that in 2021, there will be even more international participants," he said.
The event received primary support from PT Pupuk Iskandar Muda, along with additional sponsors such as PT Pertamina Hulu Energi and PT Perta Arun Gas.
The head of the organizing committee, Jagad Wibisono, apologized for any discomfort experienced during the event and promised to improve services in future events.
The Rector of Universitas Malikussaleh, Dr. H. Herman Fithra, praised the efforts of the Chemical Engineering Department for organizing such a prestigious national event. He emphasized the importance of raising awareness among young engineers about the need to protect the environment while designing chemical plants.
Dr. Muhammad, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, also expressed hope that similar events will continue to be organized in the future. He added that the Faculty of Engineering fully supports such activities as a way to introduce the faculty to a wider audience in Indonesia. Universitas Malikussaleh currently offers nine engineering majors, including Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Informatics Engineering, Architecture, Information Systems, and Materials Engineering. Additionally, the faculty offers a master's program in Renewable Energy Engineering.
"Opportunities remain open for enrollment in the Materials Engineering program," he added.
