TEKIM-UNIMAL-NEWS|The Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Malikussaleh (Unimal), recently held a Curriculum Workshop for the Chemical Engineering Program in 2024. The event, conducted at Unimal's campus, carried the theme, "Innovation and Contribution of Chemical Engineering Curriculum Based on Outcome-Based Education (OBE) in the Era of Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0 Towards Excellent Accreditation."
The workshop aimed to strengthen the outcome-based curriculum to align with the demands of Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0, while supporting the department’s efforts to achieve excellent accreditation. The event featured distinguished speakers, including Prof. Suhendrayatna, M.Eng. from Syiah Kuala University and Prof. Ir. Maya Sarah, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., IPM from the University of North Sumatra.
The workshop was officially opened by Dr. Muhammad Daud, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Universitas Malikussaleh. In his opening remarks, he expressed hope that this workshop would provide positive contributions to the development of a more adaptive and innovative curriculum. He also emphasized the importance of collaboration between academia, industry, and government in supporting outcome-based education.
The event was attended by Unimal Chemical Engineering alumni who are currently working in various industries around the campus. Some notable alumni who participated include Mr. Chasri Hanif, a Process Engineer at PT. Perta Arun Gas (PAG); Mr. Sabri, a Process Engineer at PT. Pema; and Mr. Agus, a Process Engineer at PT. Pupuk Iskandar Muda (PIM), representing users. Additionally, representatives from the government were also present, demonstrating cross-sector commitment to improving the quality of education in Chemical Engineering.
Dr. Lukman Hakim, S.T., M.Eng, the Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Universitas Malikussaleh, commented on the importance of the event:
“This workshop marks a significant step towards the evolution of our curriculum, ensuring it meets the demands of modern industries. By integrating Outcome-Based Education (OBE), we are committed to producing competent graduates who are not only academically excellent but also prepared to address real-world challenges in the chemical industry.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Fikri Hasfita, S.T., M.T., as the Chairman of the Workshop Committee, presented a comprehensive report on the event’s outcomes:
“This workshop has succeeded in gathering feedback and insights from various stakeholders, including alumni and industry professionals. The inputs gathered here will be instrumental in refining our curriculum to achieve the standards of excellent accreditation and fulfill the demands of the Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0 era.”
The workshop was attended by 250 participants, including students, lecturers, alumni, and industry representatives. One of the student participants expressed her enthusiasm:
“This workshop has been incredibly insightful. It has given me a better understanding of how the curriculum is designed to meet industry demands and how it can prepare us to be more competent professionals. I feel more motivated to engage actively in my studies and contribute to the future of our field.”
The event facilitated constructive discussions among lecturers, students, alumni, and other stakeholders regarding curriculum improvements that are more relevant to global industry changes. With the successful implementation of this workshop, it is hoped that the Chemical Engineering curriculum at Universitas Malikussaleh will continue to evolve and produce competent graduates who are ready to compete in the industry.
